Questions

How is my EPF balance calculated?

You put 12% of your basic pay and dearness allowance into EPF each month. Your employer also puts in 12%, but 8.33% of it, on pay of up to ₹15,000 a month, goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme, so at most ₹1,250 a month. The rest goes to your EPF. Interest is worked out on the monthly running balance and credited once a year.

What is the EPF interest rate for 2025-26?

EPFO's Central Board of Trustees recommended 8.25% for 2025-26 at its meeting on 2 March 2026, the same rate as the two years before. The rate is set each year, so the calculator lets you change it.

How is the EPS pension calculated?

Monthly pension is pensionable salary times years of pensionable service, divided by 70. Pensionable salary is capped at ₹15,000 a month unless you opted for a higher pension. You need at least 10 years of service, and 20 years or more adds a bonus of 2 years. The minimum pension is ₹1,000 a month. The calculator uses the standard formula, not the higher pension option.

Is the interest on EPF taxable?

Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable (₹5 lakh where your employer does not contribute). Below that, and on the employer's share, interest stays tax free. Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax free. Check the current rules under the Income-tax Act, 2025 before you act.

Is EPF enough for retirement?

For most salaried people, no. EPF is often the largest single pot at retirement, but it is built only on basic pay, and part of the employer's share goes to a pension capped at a few thousand rupees a month. Compare the income it pays with what you will spend, using our retirement calculator.
