Questions

How do I compare two mutual funds?

Look at returns over several periods, not one, and at where each fund ranks among funds of its own category. Then compare each with an index fund for the same part of the market, and check what the regular plan costs against the direct plan. This page puts all of that side by side.

Can I compare funds from different categories?

You can, and the page will show both. Keep in mind that a small cap fund and a large cap fund carry very different risk, so a gap in returns says as much about the category as about the fund. Each fund is ranked against its own category.

Which funds can I compare?

Diversified equity funds with at least a year of history: large cap, flexi cap, large and mid cap, mid cap, small cap, multi cap, focused, value, dividend yield and ELSS. Debt, hybrid, sector and index funds are left out, because ranking them by return would mislead.

Does the fund with the higher return win?

Not necessarily. The fund ahead over the last five years is often not the one ahead over the next five. Consistency across periods, cost, and how the fund fits with what you already own matter as much.

This page is for education. It shows an illustration built from the numbers and assumptions you enter. It is not investment, tax or legal advice, and it does not take your full circumstances into account. Rates of return are assumptions, not promises. Tax rules change, so check the current rules or speak to an advisor before you act.
